Abortion Pills Officially Criminalized?

(FixThisNation.com) – On Tuesday, the Louisiana House voted on a measure that would make the possession of misoprostol and mifepristone illegal for those who did not have a prescription for them. These two drugs are used as a way of medically induced abortion.

This is going to be the first time that any state will have attempted to have abortion drugs declared as being controlled substances. The vote managed to pass in a 64-29 vote. The state’s Senate is now also going to be called to vote on the measure, which is expected to be signed by Gov. Jeff Landry (R).

The legislation which will now include the amendment about the abortion drugs was sponsored by state Sen. Thomas Pressly (R), which would make “coerced criminal abortion using fraud” a crime. This means that it would be a crime to knowingly provide a woman with an abortion pill if she had not consented to be given the abortion bill.

The measure is going to mean that the two drugs are going to be added to the state’s Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Law, which regulates the drugs that are highly addictive including antidepressants, ephedrine, and even opioids.

In Louisiana it is illegal to receive abortion bills through the mail, however, the blue states’ shield laws have allowed physicians to continue prescribing the drugs despite the ban, and to send them to women through online telehealth.

This new legislation in the state could potentially stop them from doing that. However, abortion rights advocates have been fighting against the legislation which as they argue would make it significantly harder for women to gain access to safe medications.
