(FixThisNation.com) – A new law in Illinois would give non-citizens the right to become police officers within the state. In recent interviews with Fox News, many of the residents of the state expressed their opinions about the new law which varied.
One Metropolis resident, Dan, said that those who are not citizens should not be given the right to carry a badge. A different resident, Brett, said that they were more neutral on the idea and that he was not entirely against it so long as the non-citizens in question did not have a criminal record.
The new measure is going to be going into effect on Jan. 1, and under it, anyone who is legally permitted to work in the United States will be allowed to join the police force even if they are not citizens. This will also include those who are recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and want to go into law enforcement.
A woman in Southern Illinois, Angel, stated that the law was the “most stupidest” and questioned why anyone would want an immigrant to be serving as a police officer in their city. She added that she does not believe that they should be allowed to become police officers, but in any case, they needed to have extensive background checks.
Warren on the other hand believed that this could prove to be beneficial so long as all those who join the force have the necessary paperwork. He added that while this is something positive, it might also end up backfiring.
