(FixThisNation.com) – On Friday, Republican Presidential candidate Doug Burgum (ND) slammed President Biden for being reliant on Qatar for the negotiations about the release of US hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. Hamas is considered by the United States to be a terrorist organization that is currently in control of Gaza.
North Dakota governor Burgum argued that just because a country claimed to be the “Switzerland of the Middle East” and just because they had opened up the communication, it did not mean that the country was an ally of the United States. This statement was made on Friday during a Fox News interview.
The Biden administration has been collaborating with the government of Qatar in order to open a back channel of communication with Hamas. This has happened at a time when the US is trying to free up American hostages that are being held by the militant group that is currently at war with Israel.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) told the Hill that they were taking advantage of all available connections in order to ensure the release of the hostages. He added that this includes the avenues offered by Qatar which they have found to be helpful.
In the past, Qatar has been very supportive of the Palestinian militant group, while also having a tense relationship with the US. Still, the country has managed to balance its Islamist politics and stance with the US military’s close ties.
Burgum however has argued that some of the US support given to Qatar ends up in the hands of Hamas and other terrorist groups in the region. He added that President Biden was currently funding both sides in the Israel-Hamas war.
