(FixThisNation.com) – On Monday President Joe Biden attempted to draw a connection between the 2020 presidential election aftermath and the fallout of the Civil War, arguing that if former President Donald Trump won a second term in office, then basic freedoms could be threatened.
During his comparison, Biden argued that when the Confederates had been defeated, they did not accept their defeat and instead focused their attention not on slavery, but rather on the war being focused on the state’s rights. He continued by pointing out that it had been this lie that had allowed the creation of the Jim Crow laws which were discriminatory against Black people.
He pointed out that currently “we’re living in an era of a second lost cause,” and that there were some who were attempting to turn a loss into a lie that could be incredibly damaging to the United States.
These statements were made only days after Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley claimed in late December that the Civil War had been about the role of the government. Recently former President Donald Trump also claimed that he would have been able to negotiate in order to avoid the Civil War.
Biden, who spoke at Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, noted that he wanted to be clear that the Civil War had been caused because of slavery and that there were no negotiations regarding this issue.
The Church Biden had spoken in is particularly significant as a White supremacist gunman had previously shot nine people, all of whom were Black there. South Carolina lawmakers voted for the removal of the Confederate flag from the state’s Capitol after the shooting.
