(FixThisNation.com) – On Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) slammed conservative Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito for accepting gifts and luxury vacations from their wealthy friends. While Schumer did not explicitly name the two justices he did refer to the ProPublica reports published earlier this year which reported that both Thomas and Alito had repeatedly accepted gifts, including luxury vacations from major Republican donors without including these gifts in their financial disclosures.
Schumer wrote a letter titled “Dear Colleague” in which he explicitly noted that MAGA Republicans have taken over the Supreme Court, and that they believe that they have the right to accept trips and gifts from their “billionaire friends.” He added that these are billionaires who follow the same extremist ideas and who are funding the MAGA causes which are then brought in front of the Supreme Court.
He argued that Senate Democrats are going to use all available resources to push the Supreme Court to reform their ethical practices. He added that Congress has the right to “oversee the federal judiciary” and that in order for faith in the court to be restored they would need to consider all available options.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) in a statement released on Thursday pointed out that his committee is going to be marking up legislation that is going to address the ethics scandals that the Supreme Court has recently faced. In his statement, he noted that the highest court in the country could not be allowed to “have the lowest ethical standards.”
