(FixThisNation.com) – On Sunday, Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (Fla.) pushed for the House to use the sergeant-at-arms provision in order to enforce the contempt of Congress resolution against Attorney General Merrick Garland.
In an interview on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures” with Maria Bartiromo, Lina stated that she had wanted to have this resolution introduced for several months now for inherent contempt of Congress. This is a power that Congress has not been granted since the early 1900s.
In her remarks, she pointed out that she anticipated that the Justice Department would not be doing their jobs which is why she prepared this and has it “ready to go.” She has also already brought this proposition in front of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).
She pointed out that the provision would give Congress the ability to hold Garland accountable. She added that it would act as a balance on the power of the Department of Justice.
The House sergeant-at-arms is an elected officer who acts as the protocol and chief law enforcement officer and has the primary responsibility of ensuring that there is order in the House.
The Department of Justice last week issued a determination noting that Garland who refused to meet the House Republicans’ demands to hand over the audio of the conversation between special counsel Robert Hur and President Joe Biden had not committed any crime. This is because Biden had claimed executive privilege over those same tapes which protects Garland from any prosecution.
On Friday, Johnson argued that the House was going to take to court the contempt of Congress case as the Justice Department was refusing to pursue charges, even though they had done so in the past for similar cases.
