(FixThisNation.com) – The GOP has warned its members to avoid using diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) politics when criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris, who is currently the presumed presidential nominee.
Republicans have had to change their strategy following President Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race as the Democrats have been boosting Harris who is widely considered to be his replacement. However, many GOP members have used her gender and race in their arguments about her being unqualified to serve in the position.
Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) referred to the vice president as a “DEI hire.” Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) in his own comments argued that the Democrats would feel that they need to boost her as their nominee because of her “ethnic background.”
Harris is of Indian and Jamaican descent, and if elected to office she would mark several historic firsts.
Over the past year, the Republicans have focused many of their attacks on DEI initiatives as they have tried to undo the diversity and equity efforts in the federal government. At the same time, the GOP is trying to bring Black and women voters to its side, which could result in the comments about Harris’s gender and race backfiring.
On Tuesday, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) argued that the election should not be about personalities but rather about policies. He continued by noting that Harris’s gender and ethnicity should not have anything to do with the election.
The Indiana Republican Party director of diversity and engagement Whitley Yates argued that the GOP should be worried about referring to Harris as DEI.
