Major Change Made To Social Security Benefits

(FixThisNation.com) – Social Security recipients must change their login portal to continue accessing the account information online.

This week, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that users who had created a Social Security account before September 18, 2021, would need to transition to Login.gov to continue accessing their online services.

According to the SSA, recipients will have to have either a Login.gov account or an ID.me account to continue accessing their Social Security account and other online services.

So far, over 5 million account holders have transitioned to the two-step authentication process and would not need to create a new account. However, that leaves approximately 46 million users who still need to transition to the Login.gov account.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the SSA noted the agency is still in “the beginning stages of this transition,” and was currently focusing on notifying the public “about these upcoming changes,” therefore, they are yet to set a deadline for the “remaining accounts to transition.”

Yet, account holders can still switch if they want to remain ahead of the curve. When using their existing credentials, account holders will be presented with the option to switch to “Login.gov.” Selecting that option will prompt a confirmation that the account is successfully linked. Users will then be able to access their personal “my Social Security” services.

SSA had shared its hopes the new system would assist in addressing the agency’s “customer service crisis,” and reduce the lengthy wait times on its 800 number.

In a statement last week, Martin O’Malley, Social Security Commissioner, noted, “My Social Security is a safe and secure way for people to do business” with the agency, adding the agency is “excited to transition to Login.gov to access our online services.”

The “My Social Security” accounts will allow new and existing beneficiaries to apply for benefits, check the status of their benefits application, request Social Security card replacements, and estimate their future benefits.
