(FixThisNation.com) – On Monday, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York) blasted the Israeli strike on Rafah over the weekend that killed at least 45 people, describing it as “an indefensible atrocity.”
Over the weekend, the Israeli military carried out a strike on Tal al-Sultan, a neighborhood of Rafah where tents in the humanitarian zone were erected and where Israel’s military previously instructed displaced Palestinians to shelter, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
According to the Israeli military, the strike killed two senior Hamas leaders.
However, taking to X on Monday, Ocasio-Cortez described the “IDF’s attack” on the encampment as “an indefensible atrocity,” adding the actions were an “open defiance of President [Joe] Biden’s red line” and the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) “call for a ceasefire.”
The New York Democrat then added it was “long past due” for the President to carry out his word by blocking military aid to Israel. Ocasio-Cortez’s comments are a reference to comments Biden made earlier in May to prevent Israeli from attacking Rafah.
On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the strike as a “tragic mistake” and revealed there would be an investigation into the civilian deaths.
In his address to Israel’s parliament, Netanyahu suggested that despite the best efforts “not to harm innocent civilians,” there had been a “tragic mistake.”
The Israeli Prime Minister added there would be an investigation into the incident to determine the conclusion “because this is our policy.”
Sunday’s attack came days after the ICJ ordered Israel to stop its operations in Rafah, the last remaining Gaza settlement that is yet to be invaded by the Israeli military.
Israel military’s strike had been widely denounced, with a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council telling Axios on Monday that the attack is “heartbreaking” while noting the Israeli military had a “right to go after Hamas.”
However, the spokesperson indicated that there had been clear stipulations that Israel “take every precaution” to protect civilians, adding that the Biden administration was engaging with the IDF to determine what happened.
