(FixThisNation.com) – U.S. law enforcement agencies have been using artificial intelligence to increase their efforts in fighting crime and ensure community safety. Officers use drones to detect criminal activity, allowing them to have greater surveillance capabilities over larger areas.

There are over 1,400 drones that have been deployed across the country which has helped enhance law enforcement operations.

The Nashville Police Department in Tennessee has used drones to record footage of a suspected shoplifter who had then been brought into custody. The officer who was operating the drone had responded to the call and had used the drone to locate the suspect from the sky at night. This allowed the officers to make an arrest.

Across the nation, several police departments have adopted similar strategies and have been utilizing drones as non-traditional but effective tools that they use to catch criminals. Through utilizing these drones they can gain real-time suspect visibility and it allows them to have a much faster intervention. Drones are also capable of accessing locations that officers would have a harder time reaching.

SMS Films founder Jomo Johnson has argued that AI and Drone coverage is an excellent way of surveilling areas that have been hit the hardest by violence, open-air shootings, and carjackings. Law enforcement agencies have adopted a similar approach to handling crime in small and larger cities.

However, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has brought forward concerns relating to the usage of drones for law enforcement. Critics have also argued for more restrictions on drone deployment and operations.
