(FixThisNation.com) – Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville’s holding up all military promotions in opposition to a Pentagon abortion ban could undermine the ability of the United States to assist Israel, one of its longtime allies. Following Saturday’s coordinated surprise attacks by Hamas fighters more than 1,000 people have lost their lives from both sides as a result of the ensuing conflict. Thousands more have been injured as a result of the fighting.
On Sunday Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group would be sailing to the Eastern Mediterranean and that they would also be sending resources and equipment to help the Israel Defense Forces. As he pointed out the first security assistance would be arriving in Israel within the next few days. Austin also stated that the United States was completely in support of the Israeli people and the country’s defense forces.
However, the U.S. Navy in the region is currently left without a chief of naval operations as Tuberville has refused to allow any military promotions to go through. Georgetown University professor of public policy Don Moynihan has stated in a Substack post that a chief of naval operations would have been something useful at a time of conflict in the Middle East.
The Alabama Republican Senator has maintained that he was not going to lift the ban until the Pentagon got rid of its abortion policy which would provide service members the funds to travel out of state in order to get access to reproductive care and abortions.
