(FixThisNation.com) – In Virginia’s 7th Congressional District two army veterans are heading into the contentious race for the battleground district’s open seat.
The Democratic candidate is going to be 49-year-old retired Army Col. Yevgeny “Eugene” Vindman, who had been one of the officers involved in the first impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. The Republican candidate is 39-year-old former Army Green Beret and lawyer Derrick Anderson.
The seat is going to be left empty after Democrat Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D) opted to run in the gubernatorial election next year.
University of Mary Washington political analyst Stephen Farnsworth argued that this will be “one of the marquee national races” in November. He added that both parties will be paying attention to this race due to its proximity. This will mean that a lot of attention and money will be spent on the race, and people are going to consider it a bellwether for other swing districts in the country.
There are not a lot of places in the United States where military issues take as prominent of a role as they do in the 7th District in Virginia. This is because of the land between Richmond and Alexandria which is home to many defense contractors. The area also has a high number of Army Garrison Fort A.P. Hill, Marine Corps Base Quantico, and military veterans.
Both of the candidates have placed a lot of attention on their military records throughout their so far campaigns, and are likely to continue doing so leading up to the November election.
