Agents Arrested for Ketamine Smuggling
On September 19, authorities arrested two Delta Air Lines ramp agents, Leandro Alleyne and Fabian Innis, at JFK International Airport. The agents were caught attempting to smuggle over $3 million worth of ketamine brought in from a flight originating in Copenhagen, Denmark. The arrests came after authorities observed the agents handling suspicious luggage and transporting it to a secluded area of the airport tarmac.
Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan commented, “That is a very large amount of ketamine. If I were running that case, I’d be more interested in where it was going rather than where it was coming from because that is what would have the greatest impact on our community.”
Confession and Admission
Fabian Innis admitted to participating in the smuggling operation alongside Alleyne on multiple occasions. He revealed to authorities that they received payments ranging from $4,000 to $5,000 per flight for their illegal activities. Neither agent was scheduled for ramp duty on the day of the incident but proceeded with their plan regardless.
Authorities are investigating the luggage tags which had names of passengers from Flight 219. This suggests a potentially larger smuggling ring involving more insiders. Special attention is being paid to the smuggling method, which included placing backpacks inside larger suitcases.
Enormous Seizure
Homeland Security discovered 134 pounds of ketamine in the suspicious luggage, a haul valued at approximately $3 million. The significant quantity seized from the suspects has sparked concerns about the extent of the smuggling network and the potential reach of the drug within various communities. A witness also reported seeing the drugs being loaded into a vehicle used by Alleyne without proper authorization.
Delta Airlines reiterated its stance on unlawful activities stating, “Delta has zero tolerance for unlawful conduct by anyone at any place in our global operation and will always work with law enforcement to that end.”
Both agents have pleaded not guilty to the charges of drug importation and smuggling. They have been released on a $50,000 bond each while the investigation continues. The authorities highlighted that understanding the destination of the smuggled ketamine is critical for addressing the impact on communities.
