(FixThisNation.com) – Manhattan prosecutors have expressed opposition to former President Donald Trump’s gag order being terminated after the end of his New York hush money trial. This is part of their efforts to push for the judge to order more written briefings prior to making a final decision in this case.
Trump’s lawyers have written to Judge Juan Merchan, who was tasked with overseeing the trial and have requested him to lift the gag order that had been previously placed on the former President. Trump has already been found to be guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection to the hush money scheme.
On Wednesday a letter by the prosecutors was released to the public in which Assistant District Attorney Matthew Colangelo argued that restrictions were still necessary to ensure the proceedings’ protection. He added that it is the obligation of the Court to ensure integrity and fairness while administering justice through the sentencing hearing. He noted that as such the order should remain in place at least until the hearing if not until any post-trial motions have been resolved.
He also pointed out that it would be the People’s opposition that would show whether it is necessary for the Court Orders to be tailored following the end of the trial.
Trump’s sentencing hearing is meant to take place on July 11, and Colangelo had suggested that the judge should have the two parties provide written briefs relating to the gag order being extended.
The gag order limits Trump from speaking about the witnesses, court staff as well as the families of the judge and district attorney.
