Major Accident in Boulder: A Community in Crisis
Late Thursday night, a head-on collision between two high-speed freight trains in Boulder, Colorado, resulted in significant disruptions to the local community. The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. near Boulder Creek, just north of Boulder Community Hospital, leading to widespread power outages and hazardous fuel leaks. Emergency services were immediately mobilized to manage the unfolding crisis.
The collision caused severe damage to the locomotives and several cargo cars, some of which derailed. Heavy equipment was required to remove the wreckage. Video footage shows the extent of the damage and the complexities involved in the cleanup operations. The train, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway train, was about a mile long, further complicating the cleanup efforts.

Damage and Environmental Impact
The collision not only damaged the trains but also impacted a rail bridge and knocked down an electrical line, causing power outages for approximately 92 residences. Thankfully, initial concerns about fuel leaking into Boulder Creek were allayed when it was discovered that the fuel had been absorbed by sand from one of the train cars. Clean-up crews quickly addressed fuel spills and cleared the scene, reopening roads by 7 am on Friday.
The two injured crew members were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and have since been released. Though the accident caused significant disruption, there has been no long-term threat to the public or residents’ properties. Emergency crews and BNSF Railway are working diligently to return to normalcy.
