(FixThisNation.com) – Robert Ray, who had been one of the impeachment lawyers of former President Donald Trump revealed on Sunday during an appearance on CNN’s “Newsnight” that he agreed with prosecutors about the gag order in the hush money case remaining in place until the July sentencing.
In his interview, he argued that the case is not over until the final sentencing has been imposed and heard. He added that he did not find a problem with the fact that prosecutors were concerned about safety especially when there are “wingnuts out there.”
He noted during his remarks that he does not believe there is a point to taking a chance which could result in the court personnel, judge, judge’s staff, or the district attorney and his staff getting harmed.
Last month Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection to a hush money payment that he had made in 2016 to adult film star Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence about their alleged affair. Trump has appealed the case and has maintained that he never had an affair with her.
The gag order does not protect Judge Juan Merchan or Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, however, it does block Trump from making any comments about the jurors, witnesses, court staff, and the family members of the judge.
Prosecutors filed a petition asking for the gag order to be maintained. As they noted there have been over 50 threats to officials as a result of this case and the order should remain in place to protect the trial’s witnesses.
