(FixThisNation.com) – This past Saturday, Vice President Kamala Harris headed to Florida where she touted the efforts of the federal administration to provide training for those individuals tasked with the implementation of the laws that relate to stopping people who are believed to be a threat to themselves or others from accessing guns.

Many Republicans criticized the new program and referred to it as a “massive Red Flag Operation.”

A Justice Department press release from Saturday noted that the National Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) Resource Center was going to be providing technical assistance and training to those in the legal system, law enforcement officials, judges, social service providers, clinicians, behavioral health professionals, community organizers, and victim service providers.

As the Department of Justice noted the ERPO laws are modeled after the protection orders issued in cases of domestic violence and allow family members in the majority of states to petition a court to block someone from purchasing and possessing a firearm if they are considered to be a risk to others or themselves. The ban stays in place for the duration of the order.

Harris visited Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where a mass shooting had taken place in February 2018. The vice president was calling for states to “pass red flag laws” while also using federal funding in order for laws that are already in place to be implemented.

In a statement, Attorney General Merrick Garland argued that this effort was going to supply them with “valuable resources.”
