(FixThisNation.com) – On Tuesday, the two highest-ranking Senate GOP leaders pushed for the Senate to have a full trial following Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ impeachment.

During the weekly Senate Republican press conference, Whip John Thune (S.D.) and later on Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) pushed to have a full trial, which has been a demand of the conservatives in the upper chamber.

Thune, who is preparing himself to potentially one day take the place of McConnell as the Republican leader pushed for the Senate to go on full trial over the impeachment charges against Mayorkas that were passed by the House on the second try. As he argued, the House of Representatives had found that Mayorkas had committed impeachable offenses which would bring the issue in front of the United States Senate. He added that the Senate needed to hold an argument and that he would argue that this trial is going to be what would determine whether or not these were actually impeachable offenses. However, as he pointed out this would be opposed by the Democrats.

Later McConnell argued that he agreed with Thune that a trial needed to be held. However, earlier this month he had not appeared to be as strongly positioned on this issue. When asked about the trial in the Senate he replied by saying that he believed it to be the best way to move forward.

On Feb. 14, during an interview with the Hill, he had not expressed a strong opinion on the impeachment charges that had been passed by the House. He had specifically pointed out at the time that this was going to be handled by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Earlier this year some Senate GOP members had questioned if holding an impeachment trial was the best way for them to be using their time. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) had argued in January that the impeachment trial would just act as a detour from them focusing on the important work they had to do.
