Two men were also shot and wounded in the same burst of violence. Police have not said whether the boy was the intended target or was caught in a crossfire meant for someone else.

Investigators have not announced any arrests. That is common in the first hours after a shooting like this, especially when witnesses are scared or reluctant to talk to police. The Bronx has seen a pattern of gunfire in public spaces this year, often tied to disputes between older teens or young adults that spill onto sidewalks, into stores, and near schools, catching younger kids in the middle.

This is not an isolated case. Earlier this year, two boys, ages 12 and 13, were shot inside a Bronx McDonald’s on White Plains Road when a masked gunman opened fire during a targeted attack. Just months before that, a 16-year-old boy was killed and two other teens were wounded in a shooting police believe was gang related, following an argument that started inside a different Bronx McDonald’s over, of all things, ice cream.

Other recent Bronx shootings show the same grim thread. A 12-year-old was shot in the hand inside a Longwood barbershop. A different 12-year-old boy was shot while simply playing basketball on a Soundview playground. These are not gang members or hardened criminals. These are children doing ordinary kid things, in barbershops, fast food restaurants, and playgrounds, when bullets found them anyway.

Breaking crime stories like this one often change in the hours and days after they first break. Police release information as they confirm it, not all at once, so victim counts, ages, and details can shift as the investigation moves forward. That is a normal part of how local crime reporting works, not a sign that anything is being hidden or covered up.

What does not change is the toll on families and neighborhoods. Every one of these shootings leaves parents burying children, siblings growing up without a brother, and neighborhoods on edge every time kids walk to school or the corner store. A 13-year-old boy believed to be the intended target of a gang shooting was killed outside a Bronx cafe in broad daylight a few years back, a reminder that these attacks are not always random.

The Real Cost Of Repeated Gun Violence On Kids

Common sense says a 12-year-old walking near his own neighborhood should not have to worry about gunfire.
