(FixThisNation.com) – On Wednesday, Alejandro Mayorkas, the Homeland Security Secretary, avoided answering a question on Capitol Hill relating to a recent Fox News Digital article in which it was claimed that he had admitted that the release rate for apprehended illegal immigrants was currently more than 85 percent.

During a House Appropriations Committee Hearing Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., had been asking Mayorkas about recently reported statistics from the border. The hearing was focused on the 2025 fiscal year budget request of Homeland Security.

As Guest pointed out in January there had been reports about a meeting with Border Patrol agents where Mayorkas had admitted that the current rate of release in the Southern border was more than 85 percent. He proceeded to ask Mayorkas whether it was true that the conversation in question had taken place, as well as questioning if the number was accurate.

Mayorkas was quick to respond that he was not familiar with such a statistic and he did not know which exact conversation the Congressman was referring to. As he pointed out, he frequently visits the border and there are some additional details that would help him ensure that he is accurately responding to the question.

Guest proceeded to reach Fox News Digital’s report opening paragraph in which it was stated that Mayorkas’ remarks had been made during a private meeting with Eagle Pass, Texas agents. This was according to three Border Patrol sources who had also been in the room at the time.

Mayorkas stated that he was happy to provide data points but that the article in question was not a transcript.
