(FixThisNation.com) – House Democrats had slammed Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) for a recent social media post in which he had claimed that Haiti was a “shithole.”

House Committee on Foreign Affairs member Rep. Jason Crow (D-Co.) argued during a press conference that he completely disagreed with the comments that many of their GOP colleagues had made about the people of Haiti. He added that the country’s people deserved freedom, and to have prosperity, and rights much like other people across the world did.

Monday’s post by Collins had been a response to a post about the current gang violence unfolding in Haiti. Last week in an update the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs argued in an update that the violence had caused the displacement of over 360,000 people.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Collins had responded to that post by saying “Some might call it a sh*thole.”

Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.), who is also a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee also argued that the post made by Collins had displayed a contrast between his comments and the way that Democrats approached global affairs, gang violence, and people suffering. She added that they were not going to be demeaning all those suffering from criminality or gang violence.

In 2018, then-President Trump made similar comments about Haiti and African countries after he had claimed that immigrants from those countries were coming from “shithole countries.” The Washington Post had reported that the comments had been made during a meeting with lawmakers where immigrants from different nations were being discussed.
