(FixThisNation.com) – On Sunday, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) defended Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley calling for her to remain in the primary race because of her opposition to former President Donald Trump.

During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Newsom told Kristen Welker that he does not know why any Democrats might want to see Haley drop out of the race. He added that she was “defining opposition” to the former President and doing so very “effectively.”

He then claimed that there was no chance that Trump would win the Republican party’s nomination and argued that it was “beyond” him why she was choosing to stay. However, he pointed out that she was a great surrogate for the Democrats as she was attacking Trump on his flaws.

Newsom noted that Haley had been making points against Trump that he was “applauding every single day” and that she was effective in doing it. He said that this was why he was hoping that she would be staying in the race.

Haley has an uphill battle following her loss in the Saturday night race in South Carolina. Haley had been hopeful about her performance in her home state however she ended up losing to Trump by 21 points. Still, Haley has retained that she is intending to stay in the Republican primary race for at least March 5, which is Super Tuesday.

On Saturday she pointed out that she had previously said that regardless of what was going to happen in South Carolina she was intent on continuing to run in the U.S. election. She added that she was going to stand by her word and that she would not be leaving the race when the majority of Americans did not approve of President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump.
